‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe debut appearance the Athletic striker competed in England, an 18-year-old appearing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in September 2015, he scored. On his next visit he took the field in England, against Sunderland weeks after, he converted. His third outing, against the Citizens six weeks after that, indeed, he scored again. When he returned to the city to play against the Red Devils at Leigh’s ground in that year, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, also. “Actually,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” So Athletic did their duty: they took him off.
“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker reveals, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the second half: I was without a signed agreement, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. No confirmation on interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the usual talk. I have no idea the validity, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at the club. It’s a privilege.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the facility, Bilbao, the early training is ready to commence; post-session, the short journey to the airport and another trip to England, now to take on the Magpies in the UCL on Wednesday. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a difficult season for the club, due in part to the demands of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. Yet, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway accompanied by a million fans after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.
He considered it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. The son of the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that nurtured the coach, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he experienced a serious knee problem, being released, a relegation and a recall before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to experience the peak of their lives.
“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the top level but every phase you advance through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his first game and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and my knee gave way.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it made me change the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, as a youngster does. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. Every small aspect: do them.
“At the top level you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
You also have to play. Guruzeta departed upset in that year, aged 23, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and should the time come they need someone where you play, recall is possible. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
No wonder he says savor the moment. Especially after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
